Ohio Nurses Association (ONA) and Ohio nurses are advocating that Ohio strengthens its law regarding safe staffing for nurses. As health care continues to evolve, an evidence-based and accountable nurse staffing solution is essential for optimal patient care and nurse safety.
Mandating a nurse to work overtime can result in fatigue that compromises their ability to deliver optimal patient care. Research shows that fatigue causes an increased risk in errors, decline in memory, reduced ability to learn, and impaired mood and communication skills.
ONA recognizes that Ohio nurses are extremely concerned about safe staffing and the current situation needs to change. That is why ONA is currently working with policy makers to develop budget language that will address safe staffing policies, including mandatory overtime. In the coming weeks, we look forward to sharing the specific language and our next steps for safe staffing in Ohio.
